Internal Conflict

I was walking to the train station and this thing went on in my head…

AMD: Suck shit Intel we made the first DUAL-CORE!!!
Ppl: WTF. that’s fully sick bro, but wtf is with the price! and it’s not actually any faster!
Intel: *sigh* We might as well release it too…
AMD: Ahahaha, copy cats! We were here first!
Intel: *sigh*
~3 Months Later~
Intel: Introducing CONROE!
Ppl: ZOMGWTFBBQ, HIGH PERFORMANCE AND IT’S CHEAP?!?!?!?!
AMD: We got pwnz0red
Intel: We wll also introduce the quadcore in Januaray 2007
AMD: Intel’s quadcore is just two dual cores stuck together…we will introduce REAL quadcore…
~9 months later~
AMD’s HEADOFFICE: ~tumbleweed rolls by~
Intel: Good work guys.

God I hate amd fanboys.

Anywho…

I formated my comp and installed Vista…AND…UBUNTU!!!

Here’s what happened yesterday…
  • Formated Vista
  • Installed Vista
  • realised that XP fucked up and created a EXTENDED partition
  • download partition magic
  • it tells me Vista isn’t supported
  • I format Vista
  • I install XP
  • install partition magic
  • realise that partition magic can’t solve the problem with EXTENDED partitions
  • realise also that the trial version doesn’t do shit but lets you see what it can actually do
  • cbb download full version and wasting 30 megs
  • formated xp
  • installed Vista
  • tried installing Ubuntu via the OFFICIAL guide
  • realised that parts of it were screwed thus corrupting my Vista partition
  • formated Vista
  • decided to just install vista on 50gig partition
  • allocated 10 gigs to ubuntu
  • installed ubuntu via APC guide

Everything was smooth from that point on.

This morning I decided to setup my Ubuntu with some other stuff.

  • Decided to install pidgin the HARD way
  • tried compiling and realised C dependencies were not installed
  • Installed C dependencies
  • tried compiling again…
  • realise that there were other dependencies which didn’t work
  • installed other dependencies
  • finally got pidgin up and running to realise that the ssl dependency was not installed
  • UNINSTALL pidgin
  • installed ssl dependency
  • recompiled
  • reinstalled

And then it was finally working. I could have just installed it via a package but i thought might as well do it the hard way.

It was pretty fun actually. I got pretty much everything setup.

Now I’m faced with a predicament. I’ve been using Ubuntu all day now…and right now is the first time that I’m actually using Vista…well Vista is nice and all…but Ubuntu is a lot more stable. A "quick" restart in Ubuntu takes literally 5 seconds…I shit you not.

HOWEVER, there are several limitations.

  • There is a "easy" way of accessing Window’s drives from Linux however, having Windows accessing linux is the BIGGEST bitch…theres like 3 different guides for the same thing except each is different and I reach a step where I just go "wtf" cause I just don’t see it…
  • I haven’t found a decent bittorrent client…I refuse to use Mainline, Azureus o Bittornado…
  • OpenOffice sucks balls. It sucks HUGE balls. Okay I haven’t really used it…but it SUCKS balls from first glance. I open up a document and yeah…it just looks soo outdated. When they (Microsoft) claimed that OpenOffice is 10years behind Office…I’d probably have to agree…but then again…I could always just use LaTeX. :P
  • In addtion OPERA DOES NOT SUPPORT 64bit!!!!! *cries*

Yup those are my biggest complaints. However, Ubuntu’s GUI just blows my boxz0rs. Flip 3D? Ubuntu’s CUBE blows all over you.

However, despite everything VISTA is a lot more comfortable. In the sense that I don’t feel cramped using my pc. Ubuntu just seems extremely cramped up…but I guess the cube makes up for it SOMEWHAT. For those wtfing at the "CUBE" you have to see it…to know what it is.

So yes…I guess…what I can do is finish download dragonball…and halo2…and then slowly transition over to ubuntu. And hopefully I can get networking setup 100%. :D A task for the holidays.

How to be a true Asian. Part 2

I wrote Part 1 like two years ago promising I would have a followup…Well here it is! Tony Tan should be happy since he commented something like “Can’t wait for Part 2″.
Well…it’s not really “Asian” it’s probably more specifically “Shang” since I think “Shangs” tend to over do it…a lot. What is this you ask?
Pride Etiquette
Here is how to maintain your pride when you’re asian.
On the street
  • If you meet someone on the street and you’re also carrying a consumable you MUST offer it (even if the person you meet is a 5 year old and the consumable you’re carrying is a pack of cigarettes)
  • If the person refuses, you MUST insist
  • The only time to stop insisting is if the person (or guardian) physically stops you by blocking access or simply blocking your hands
  • If you were offered something, ALWAYS say no. Especially if it’s money. Even if you’re so poor that you needed the money to buy good ol homebrand goods say NO. Pretend that you have enough money to wipe your ass with. However, if they comment on your wealth, say that you’re a poor bastard
  • Only accept the offer if they physically incapacitate your hands or stuff the item in you

At a restaurant

  • If you were invited and feel that it’s your duty to OFFER to pay for the dinner you must do so
  • However, ONLY do so on the assumption that you’ll never have to whip out a cent, otherwise you’ll walk home a poor person
  • There are many levels you have to go through in order to fully maintain your pride as an “important” or “close” person
  • First, you must take out your wallet, the host will then stop you
  • Second, after taking out your wallet, take out money, the host will try and stop you
  • Third, take out the money and somehow make the host hold the money for at least ONE second (any shorter and it doesn’t count and any longer then that money is as good as gone)
  • The host will then take the money and force it back into you where you will reluctantly give up
  • Now if you were the host, you first need to make it clear that you’re paying (even if it is obvious enough). This is as simple as calling the waiter or simply asking if everybody is ready to leave
  • A friend will suggest paying for the meal (if this doesn’t happen then I guess you’re not popular)
  • And then you will go through the steps of refusing the offer
  • Amidst all this everybody else will be watching you two and you two will be exchanging remarks like “No it’s okay” “Bu yao ke chi” and other random crap

The next section is more general.

In order to be a real Asian, you have to make it absolutely clear that you really do CARE. If you meet somebody on the street you must ask about their life, it’s so much more than a simple Western “How are you”. You need to ask about the kids, the husband, the house, kid’s education shit like that…and at the same time PRETENDING to care. If you’re really good at this the convo may last ages and you may end up enjoying it…but then you’ll begin talking about all sorts of crap that you really shouldn’t be talking about on the street.

*sigh* What else is there?

It’s your absolute DUTY to care about the financial status of another Asian. You need to know when they bought their house, when they’ve paid off their mortgage, how long they’ve had their mortgage and how much pocket money they give their kids.

Note: This blog reflects the last generation of Asian

Everything is falsifiable

The humanistic approach to personality theory claims that the truth is the experience we undergo with the rest of the world.

But then…if that’s all truth is how do we know that something is true if we don’t experience it? Are there any truths that our experiences cannot compensate for?

The humanistic approach does seem rather comforting. Humans are perfect. Everything that we do has a goal…a purpose. We control everything we do.

But it doesn’t really take a great deal of seeking before you realise how screwed up YOU’RE world is. I’m not talking about the stuff you see on TV. When you’re young nothing bad happens (unless you’re unfortunate), you grow up thinking how lovely the world is…or perhaps how lovely the world is to you. You are the centre of your parent’s world…you ARE the world. Until you enter school til you find out that there are a whole bunch of other kids just like you, but not everybody is the same, some are better, faster, smarter, taller…whatever, so you feel like crap cause you can’t meet the expectations of others.

Yet, the world is perfect.

I want to believe in the humanistic approach…but sometimes…I just can’t put my head around it…perhaps it’s cause I’ve yet to walk in everybody’s shoes…but maybe it’s cause it’s just a whole lot easier believing that people are selfish, hating, "evil".

I was in the library today…and it somewhat brought back memories of last year…studying for the HSC.

Now I don’t like to think that I’m discriminatory on "race" (if such a thing exists) but…stereotypes just enter my mind.

A black man sat across me.

Wearing a bandana, with a pair of glasses sitting on top of it, he was also wearing baggy pants. But the thing that caught my eyes was the fact that he was carrying books…intellectual books. But then again…no "gansta" would ever set foot in a library. He carried a book called "The universe collapsing" (i think) by Isaac Asimov. When he sat down I took notice of the other book he carried…a chunky textbook with the words "Physics" across it. He sat down…opened up a book, began reading and taking notes…

At the moment I was thinking "Hmmm…wouldn’t it be great to have a black friend?" The first person that came to mind was Chaitu…but then he’s not really black…he’s brown. :P And then the next thought that came to my head was how Engleman has this pet hate for "Africans". So yeah…I was doing my work…and alround 1.5 hours later…he all of a sudden began talking to me…and asking to see my MATH1901 paper. I handed it to him and he began doing the first question. I asked if he did Maths and he replied saying he’s a Phd Student in Physics. I further learnt that he was studying at Macquarie but is planning on transferring to another uni. In addition I learnt that previously he had actually studied in China…Beijing. We even exchanged words in Mandarin…

So here I was…sitting in front of a South African man…who is not only a phd student but can also speak Mandarin…(did I mention he was black?)

I just wished this man, who’s name I found out to be Alberts, becomes successful in life…more so than most successful people.

And this is another library encounter…

That’s just the way I am

I enjoy making my computer as "neat" as possible. I hate having a cluttered, disorganised computer.

In fact, I’m so crazy about keeping a "clean" computer that I managed to get my 43 processes down to 16 on my old XP machine.

Vista is a totally different story…I’ve still yet to know which processes are essential and which bits are not…I’ve disabled about a handful of services but…the process number is still up there in the 40s. But yeah…Vista at least provides you with a by default "neat and organised" computer. The registry is A LOT cleaner than XP and the documents and settings are organised in a more "nice" manner. The only thing I dislike is the number of junk progras packaged alongside it that I will use…ever…

Everything also seems to be a lot tightly integrated. Removing one thing might break something else…but yeah…I’m hoping VLite goes final soon so I can test how minimal I can actually get Vista to be.

It disturbs me when I see a cluttered desktop/tasktray. I think to myself "Why do you do this to your computer?". It’s sorta impossible to have a clean tasktray but a cluttered desktop but when I see a clean desktop with a cluttered tasktray I’m thinking "That’s like having an obese man trapped in a fat man’s body".

But yeah…I have this "obsession" of having the mot optimal solution to everything. I managed to get my ACM "subwords" down to 32 lines (without using any cheap tactics). In the end I had only one for loop, one if statement and a while loop. It was the shortest solution I’ve written for one of the hardest problems. Tim told me that my solution took 20seconds to run through all the test cases. That’s pretty damn good considering it beat all of his Java solutions (which took 100, 60 and 40 seconds respectively). Though I have a feeling mine wasn’t that much faster than his (if faster at all), since he may have gotten some digits mixed up…but I really am interested in seeing how fast my solution was.

Things to do after my INFO exam:
1) Call up JAV IT
2) Backup documents and settings
3) Format C and D
4) Install Vista
5) Install Ubuntu
6) Restore files

I might even use Ubuntu as my primary OS.

I got so many things planned this semester break and hopefully I can get most of them accomplished. Gah…I hope this doesn’t end up another one of those times where I get next to nothing done.

Things to get done:
1) WORK!!!
2) Get P’s!!!
3) Buy a webhost
4) SEC reunion?
5) Invite Fobs over
6) Train at Gym
7) Eye and dental checkup
8) Study some semester 2 stuff
9) Learn more JAVA!!! (I S2 Hashes)
10) Find a second job :P (doubt this will happen)
11) Make Fob video (I said I would do this last holidays *whistles*)

I wish somebody can just make me keep these promises.

I should seriously concentrate on the upcoming exams rather than fantasising on what I will do…

When Cultures Collide

What happens when two people who are culturally inept meet each other?

*random white dude walks into lab*
Me: Hey…I know you!
White Dude: I know you too!!! *pause* You’re my tutor! Or at least for a period…
Me: (WTF?!?!?!?!) Weren’t you sitting next to me yesterday at the labs…were you at the project competition?
Terry: (WTF?!?!?!?!)
White Dude: Yeah, you were my tutor for a while and then you left…
Terry: He’s in 1st year…
Me: Were you at project competition?
White Dude: No…I’m in third year…
Me: (Damn you white boys look alike)
White Dude: (Damn you asians look alike)

I cut myself :(

The project competion was on Wednesday and a bunch of the guys came plus my sweet sweet Diana. So yes, it was nice seeing the guys again. It was rather sad leaving and I don’t have that much to say regarding the night…well I’m sure I do but I just perhaps don’t want to.
But yeah, I got back and began doing my INFO presentation.
During my presentation on Thursday I slipped the words “n00b”, “newbie”, “romesh pwns” and “penis” in. Not sure if this was a wise move but I sorta just pretended I didn’t know.
Afterwards, majority of the info class went to “The Rose” for drinks, well I didn’t drink mainly cause I only had 3 bucks in my wallet. But yeah, David and I left when they decided to have dinner so yeah…that’s how my day ended.
Yesterday was more eventful, had maths, hour break, and then Psych with a schoolgirl.
We went to Broadway for some lunch…and decided to go to K^2 afterwards, so we trudged through the rain. It was nice of the wind to be constantly against us. In the end I figured i probably would be easier to walk without the umbrella and be WET rather than walking with the umbrella and still get somewhat wet.
And then…as we were walking past Subway, I tried to unfold my umbrella and then the wind suddenly picked up, the metal which held the two sections of the umbrella split and CUT my finger!!! At first it seemed like a small cut until ALL this BLOOD began coming out…and it was dripping on the ground and on my umbrella, due to Diana’s quick thinking nature she rushed into subway and got me a band-aid :)
I guess that sums up my week quiet nicely (or at least the past 3 days). I’ve got photos uploaded as well so yeah…didn’t take as many as I wished and there was no group ROFLCOPTER photo :(
I almost forgot, we won the people’s choice award for the best gui program. But then again we tied with this other team…I guess I didn’t bring enough AZN ganstas to vote. :P But yeah, thanks a lot to all those who came. :) I don’t know what the prize is, but I don’t really care…
